Click above for high-res gallery of the Transformers cars from GM

When you're forced into a life-and-death situation like General Motors, a lot of tough calls have to be made - yet some are more obvious than others. In this case, The General has made it clear that it plans to slash its North American marketing spending - by some $800 million dollars.

That's an extra $200M on top of the $600M that already GM vowed it would cut by 2010 in a disclosure it made back in December. And it isn't just things like SuperBowl commercials, and print ads - vehicle incentives will also be impacted, something that will doubtlessly affect the already tough sledding that dealers are experiencing.

Another example: Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. Despite early efforts to tie Chevrolet to the Shia LaBeouf/Megan Fox Paramount sequel with efforts like the Corvette Centennial Concept and "Jolt" Volt unveiling at the Chicago Auto Show, trade publication Advertising Age is reporting that GM will not spend much money to co-promote the movie.

For the initial 2007 Transformers movie, GM is said to have spent "tens of millions" of dollars in advertising-related initiatives, but not only can the financially-strapped automaker not afford to do so, it realizes it may also not be a good idea in light of the taxpayer bailout. AdAge is quoting one insider as saying:

"You're not going to see any TV media that I know of. Even though you can make a case for it from a marketing standpoint, it's the kind of thing that might get you roundly criticized in light of today's climate. It's viewed as too risky, sort of like Citibank's deal with the Mets. GM can't afford to do that.

The message is clear: Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Jolt and Mudflap... you're on your own.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: GM Transformers cars LIVE

[Sources: Automotive News; Advertising Age]
Snip-Snip: GM slashing $800M from marketing budget (yes, even Transformers) originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 14:59:00 EST.
It's not often that we report on ourselves, but our own illustrious editor-in-chief, John Neff (third from the left in the snazzy corduroy sport jacket his grandma got him last Christmas), participated in a symposium titled "Engaging the Blogosphere" at this year's Chicago Auto Show. It was a look at what the internet, and blogging in particular, means to the future of automotive journalism and marketing. Anchored by a brief analysis of the power of the internet on new car buyers, the event ended with a panel discussion that included representatives from "traditional media," an OEM, a car buying site and our own little professional blog. While the discussion produced some heated debate, it also helped put some outdated misperceptions of blogging to rest.

Follow the jump to read the whole story and learn what happened to shake up the room during the panel discussion. We've also embedded a video of the panel discussion so you can see for yourself what went down.

NOTE: We deliberately resisted the urge to add speech bubbles to the image above, so feel free to download a copy, add your own and post a link to it in the comments section of this post.
Continue reading Chicago 2009: The blogosphere has been engaged [w/VIDEO]

Chicago 2009: The blogosphere has been engaged [w/VIDEO] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 19:01:00 EST. For a mere $50, Illinois motorists can acquire special-edition temporary license plates that further shows their ardor for President Barack Obama (beyond the usual assortment of Hope/Change/Etc. bumper stickers). Proceeds from the sale of the license plates (which you can buy at the Chicago Auto Show next week) benefit the Illinois Library Association.

The tags are valid between February 17 and April 17, 2009, at which point they will undoubtedly appear, en masse, on eBay. Hat tip to Michael D. for the heads-up.

[Source: ChicagoBreakingNews.com]
Illinois to offer temporary Barack Obama license plates originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Feb 2009 13:38:00 EST.
Tucked away in a corner of McCormick Place was this custom WRX STI built in as part of a cooperative effort between Subaru and Travis Pastrana's race team, Vermont SportsCar. The car commemorates Pastrana's third consecutive Rally America National Championship, and although a one-off, many of the parts on the car can be purchased through your local authorized Subaru dealer.

The exterior features custom yellow paint, a carbon fiber hood and rear spoiler, front chin spoiler, and a set of PIAA 2100 HID driving lights. Handling is improved thanks to an SPT strut tower brace, lower chassis brace, and BFGoodrich G-Force Super Sport A/S tires wrapped over satin black Work Evolution XD-9 wheels.

Under the hood, the 2.5-liter boxer engine gets an upgraded ECU and custom downpipe, while the interior now sports custom blue Alcantara seats with yellow piping, short-throw shifter, Kicker sound system and... an XBox 360. Full details in the press release after the break, and high-res photos from the show floor in the gallery below.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: Subaru Travis Pastrana Impreza WRX STI

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.

[Source: Subaru]
Continue reading Chicago 2009: Subaru Impreza WRX STI Travis Pastrana Edition

Chicago 2009: Subaru Impreza WRX STI Travis Pastrana Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 13:59:00 EST.
Click above for high-res gallery of the VW CC Gold Coast concept

It made its debut over the summer at Pebble Beach. It showed up again in November at SEMA. And finally, we have a set of our own live shots of the CC Gold Coast concept because Volkswagen sent the swanky 4-door to Chi-town.

The Gold Coast is doused in a rich-looking brown finish dubbed "Pepe Pepper" by DuPont, and it adopts a squat, muscular stance riding on a set of KW coilovers. 19-inch wheels fill out the wells nicely, and a full ground effects kit brings the look even closer to the ground. Veedub's 280-horsepower 3.6 FSI V6 sits underhood, mated to a six-speed DSG. Stopping power on this looker is further enhanced with a set of the Audi R8's ceramic discs in front.

While the CC Gold Coast is technically a concept, VW's making sure it gets in front of as many eyes as possible. Hence, we wouldn't be surprised to see the "concept" moniker eventually turn into "special edition" - minus those supercar stoppers.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: Volkswagen CC Gold Coast

Photos copyright Frank Filipponio/ Weblogs, Inc.
Chicago 2009: Volkswagen CC Gold Coast concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 10:27:00 EST.
When it comes to consumer loyalty, you'd be hard pressed to find a more dedicated group of fans outside the heavy-duty pickup segment. Recognizing this, Dodge has brought a slew of full-size trucks to the Chicago Auto Show in the form of the 2010 Dodge Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 HD Chassis Cabs.

Dodge started the heavy-duty retrofit with the highly-competent 1500 model introduced last year, then proceeded to create a crew cab variant that's claimed to be packing the most room in its class. Both regular and Mega Cab variants will be offered, along with two bed sizes (six-foot, four-inch or eight-foot) and five trim levels: ST, SLT, TRX, Laramie and Power Wagon.

Pickup aficionados will notice the new bumper treatment, larger grille (with chrome, black or body-colored trim), wider fenders for the dually models and the subtle tailgate lip to improve aerodynamics.

The HD comes standard with Dodge's HEMI 5.7-liter V8, putting out 383 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque through a beefed-up 545RFE five-speed automatic. However, with a take-rate of over 90% for the diesel engine on HD models, Dodge is offering the optional 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six that channels 350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque to a 68RFE six-speed automatic featuring low-speed "creeper" mode and Electronic Range Select, allowing the driver to limit which high gear is used while towing. Two 4x4 models will be offered, along with four different axle ratios, and on the topic of towing, the Ram 3500 HD, equipped with the Cummins turbodiesel, dual rear wheels, 4x4 system and a 4.10 rear axle ratio can handle a maximum payload of 5,110 pounds and a towing capacity of 18,500 pounds. Sales will begin this fall and all the details can be found in the press release below the fold.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: 2010 Dodge Ram 3500HD

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Chicago 2009: Dodge Ram 3500HD

Chicago 2009: Dodge Ram 3500HD originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 19:59:00 EST.
It was only a matter of time before we got around to posting our beautiful people gallery from the Chicago Auto Show. Models have been pretty scarce at all of the major shows this year, and this year's Chi-town extravaganza was no exception. We've done our level best to search out those who've shown up to give them some screen time. As always, we appreciate the tireless work of the booth professionals who have to stand in heels all day and pretend to be happy to see another camera shoved in their faces. Many have mentioned that they are fans of Autoblog, but we suspect they say that to everyone. Still, we know that many will be viewing this post (with their families in some cases) so please keep your comments to yourself if you don't have anything nice to say.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: Booth professionals

Live photos copyright (C)2009 Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, inc.
Chicago 2009: City of big shoulders... and big smiles originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 19:29:00 EST.
Click above for a gallery of K9s at the Chicago Auto Show

For the second year in a row, the Chicago Auto Show has been invaded by our furry, four-legged friends as the Bark Buckle UP campaign announces its Pet Safe Choice Awards. We moseyed on down to the show floor to spend some quality time with the dozen or so K9s in attendance after they'd graduated from the American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. program. More to the point, here are the winners of the Pet Safe Awards:

Pet Safe Vehicle of Choice: GMC Acadia

Pet Safe Hotel of Choice: Hilton Hotels and Resorts

Pet Safe Airline of Choice: American Airlines

Pet Safe Retailer of Choice: PetSmart

We were a bit shocked when the group informed us that 98% of all dogs that travel in vehicles do so unrestrained. This could be a major safety hazard, especially since pet travel has reportedly increased by 300% since 2005 and a 60-pound dog can turn into a 2,700 pound projectile in a 30 mph accident. Needless to say, that's unsafe for both pets and their owners. In other words... better buckle up.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: Bark Buckle UP dogs

Live photos copyright (C)2009 Jeremy Korzeniewski / Weblogs, Inc.
Chicago 2009: This show is for the dogs originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 17:01:00 EST.
As Will Ferrell once said, "If you've got it, flaunt it." The boys at SRT are quite proud of the Viper ACR's 7:22.1 run of the Nürburgring, and they have brought the car out to Chicago to let everyone know who sits atop the podium. We would've assumed it was just your everyday Viper ACR except that the team that set the record has signed the carbon fiber rear wing including the driver, SRT engineer Tom Coronel. The record-setting run, which was done back in August, bested the likes of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (7:22.4), Maserati MC12 (7:24.3), Pagani Zonda F Clubsport (7:24.7) and Ferrari Enzo (7:25.3). We've included a new gallery of the car from the show and embedded the video of the lap after the jump in case you missed it the first time around.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: Record-setting Dodge Viper ACR

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Chicago 2009: Record-setting Viper ACR makes an appearance

Chicago 2009: Record-setting Viper ACR makes an appearance originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 15:58:00 EST.
The lack of press conferences on our second day in Chicago gave us some time to wander around and take photos of all the cars nicely set up on the floor. As expected, there weren't nearly as many debuts as Detroit or L.A., but still plenty of cars that are desktop-worthy. There were the Autobots from the upcoming Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen including Skids, Mudflap, Bumblebee in both auto and bot forms, plus the new Stingray Concept. From Ford there is the Taurus SHO and Harley Davidson F-150, and Hyundai brought out a trio of Genesis Coupes including the Red Bull-sponsored drift car and the track-oriented R-Spec version. Other highlights included the twentieth anniversary of the Miata, the Nissan Cube, Acura TSX V6, Kia Forte, and the Nissan Cube.
Along with Barack Obama, the Cubs, Al Capone and the Sears Tower, Chicago is home to the world's most famous Mopar dealer, Mr. Norm's legendary Grand Spaulding Dodge. While Mr. Norm sold the dealership in the late 1970's, the Mopar Hall of Famer has recently made a resurgence, officially introducing the 1968 Dodge GSS Hemi Dart last year in Chicago as well as the Super Cuda and Challenger at SEMA just a few months ago. The Challenger is making an appearance here in Chicago as well, with a slick new two-tone paint scheme and 900 supercharged horsepower underneath the hood. Other features include a carbon fiber front and rear spoiler, Katzkin leather interior, SSBC eight-piston front brakes, and a Hurst pistol grip shifter. Like the Hurst and its HEMI Challenger, Mr. Norm is selling a production version of the car with a a variety of styling options and performance levels ranging from 600 to 900 horsepower.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: Mr. Norm's Super Challenger

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.
Chicago 2009: Mr. Norm's Super Challenger originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 12:57:00 EST. When we saw the special Cube Krom on the eve of the Chicago Auto Show, we figured we could remedy that situation by adding a fistful of new photos to the database.

Whether in blinged out Krom trim or regular old just-Cube form, this is one unique vehicle with an attitude that reminds us of the first-generation Scion xB. It should, as these two vehicles came from the same Japanese market that values quirky, versatile and small in the same package. In addition to the plain white model that was in Los Angeles, Nissan brought along the Krom and another customized version seen here. This green example shows the customization possibilities that Nissan wants to promote in this new model. The body kit, wheel upgrade and rear spoiler really make this Cube shine. You can see our previous post on the Cube for more details, but don't forget to feast your eyes on these live shots from Chicago. Keep your eyes open for the the carpet garden growing out of the dash and the zen ripples on the headliner.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: Nissan Cube and Cube Krom

Live photos copyright (C)2009 Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, inc.

Chicago 2009: U.S.-spec Nissan Cube and Cube Krom originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 11:38:00 EST.

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show, Hyundai
Hyundai America CEO John Krafcik delivered a keynote address at the opening of the Chicago Auto Show media preview where he called on the industry to dramatically change the way it does business. According to Krafcik, for decades, extravagance has been the name of the game in the car biz - just as it has been in most of corporate America. In the past six months, however, things have started to change, with automakers cutting back on the overblown productions at auto show press conferences and in many cases eliminated such conferences altogether. But Krafcik doesn't think the swing has gone far enough.

That's just one small part of the problem, though. Krafcik acknowledged that the industry as a whole is seen as slow and unresponsive as well as wasteful. He called on voluntary limits to executive compensation that are tied to some multiple of what the average worker gets paid. "What if our industry was the first to exercise a more inclusive form of capitalism that voluntarily restrained executive compensation to a reasonable multiple of average employee salary? And what if our industry adopted a uniform code of conduct regarding gifts, meals and business entertainment?"

Krakcik wants his industry to be more modest and humble. Instead of fighting everything that needs to be done, he believes the auto industry must take the lead in re-shaping corporate America.

[Source: Automotive News - sub. req'd]
Chicago 2009: Hyundai CEO Krafcik calls on auto industry to set example with reform originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 10:59:00 EST.
Click above for our high-res gallery of the Alton F-650 XUV Command Center and its friends

At last year's Chicago Auto Show we found one of the most outrageous trucks we'd ever seen. It was the Alton F-650 XUV and it was enormous. This year, the same company is back with a new project based on the all-new 2009 F-series. The Alton XUV Command Center is an urban assault vehicle of the highest order, with a massive footprint, several huge strobes and a lengthy list of features. If the 660 lb-ft of torque isn't enough to pummel Geos in its path, the extra power boost provided by a tank of nitrous will finish the job. And the inside is just as much fun.

Where last year's project had one massive TV that dropped down inside the tailgate, this version has screens for each passenger, and even provides a unique rear-mounted command post where someone can control that nitrous system among other things. As it was last year, this Alton XUV is parked in an area of the show floor set aside for Ford's work vehicles. Besides the Command Center, there were a number of other work truck concepts and real-world F-Series applications including an F-750-based fire truck, a massive cherry picker and even a Dewalt-themed construction site office. Check out the gallery for live shots of each.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: Alton F-650 XUV Command Center and friends

Live photos copyright (C)2009 Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, inc.

Chicago 2009: Alton XUV - Return of the ginormous Ford trucks originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 10:02:00 EST.
Click above for a high-res gallery of 20 years of the Mazda Miata/MX-5

Twenty years ago, Mazda took the wraps off the first generation Miata/MX-5 in Chicago. Over the next two decades the lightweight roadster solidified its place in the enthusiast hierarchy and evolved with larger engines, more gears and extra amenities. Amazingly, it never lost its edge.

Mazda wanted to commemorate the Miata's milestone at this year's Chicago Auto Show, but rather than trot out a 20th Anniversary Edition with a few badges and a custom color, Mazda dusted off a handful of concepts, one-offs and notable MX-5s that defined the roadster and help create the Cult of Miata that a few Autoblog staffers continue to worship at to this day.

Check the gallery below for some of our favorite models, including a hardtop coupe concept that resulted in a JDM-only fixed-roof Miata and the Mono-Posto Roadster that had us seriously contemplating a late-night attack on our NA with a sawzall and some bondo.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: Twenty Years of the Mazda Miata

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.
Chicago 2009: 20 years of the Mazda Miata/MX-5 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 20:02:00 EST.
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Lexus F-Sport vehicles and accessories

Lexus wasn't doing much in the Windy City this week, so it used the opportunity to release a new line of F-Sport accessories for the GS, IS AWD and upcoming IS C.

Thankfully, Lexus is keeping the majority of its F-Sport items focused on performance, beginning with 18- or 19-inch wheels and six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes, each equipped with stainless steel lines and uprated brake pads. Bilstein shocks, lowering springs, sway bars, a chassis brace, clutch set, short shifter kit, intake and stainless steel exhaust round out the performance options, while a carbon fiber engine cover, shift knob and floor mats appease the dress-up crowd.

When installed by an authorized dealer, the TRD-developed performance parts carry a 12-month warranty on their own or for the balance of the new car warranty. We're looking forward to getting some seat time in a fully-kitted IS 350 equipped with all the F-Sport goodies, so stay tuned for a thorough review. Make the jump for a listing of all the F-Sport parts.

Gallery: Lexus F-Sport Accessories

Continue reading Chicago 2009: Lexus expands F-sport parts to includes GS, IS convertible and IS AWD

Chicago 2009: Lexus expands F-sport parts to includes GS, IS convertible and IS AWD originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 19:42:00 EST.
Being that the biggest reveal of this year's Chicago Auto Show has been the new 2010 Ford Taurus SHO, we thought you might enjoy some video of it actually moving rather than just posing all pretty on a show stand. We found some B-roll footage of the new SHO being driven sans a soundtrack, but we also went one further and got the actual video that Ford played during the car's debut today. Both can be watched after the jump, and the reveal video also includes guest appearances by some true SHO enthusiasts. Oddly enough, my agent never received a call.

[Source: Ford]
Continue reading VIDEO: 2010 Ford Taurus SHO reveal video... revealed

VIDEO: 2010 Ford Taurus SHO reveal video... revealed originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 19:21:00 EST.
Click above for high-res gallery of the 2010 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition

Flush from the news that its F-150 pickup performed markedly better than many of its primary competitors in a new series of IIHS side-impact crash tests, Ford has rolled out its latest larger-than-life Harley-Davidson model.

Outside of the appearance items, the HD is essentially a Platinum Edition F-Series in motorcycle leathers, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Available in either Lava (dark maroon) or Tuxedo Black, the Harley looks very aggressive in the metal - and the effect is not just a function of scale. The bold six-bar grille and 22-inch Harley-branded polished/painted alloys clearly set it apart as a distinct model from other F-Series pickups, and Ford has also slathered the pickup in oversized emblems and strange red "swoosh" marks on the rocker panels. While we could do without the latter flourishes, the truck still strikes us as particularly good-looking in Lava.

Ford's 14th Harley-branded product also has a seriously dolled-up interior that is likewise not for introverts. The prevailing theme behind the cabin's styling is that of a Harley biker jacket, and the materials, color choices, and the gigantic badges on the seats and center console (including a serialized plate) are unsubtle but appropriate.

Clearly not a truck for wallflowers, Ford continues to carve out niche after niche for its new 2010 F-150. Click on the gallery below for in-person shots of the new HD F-150, and then click here for more details.

Gallery: Chicago 2009: 2010 Ford Harley Davidson F-150

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.
Chicago 2009: (You Can Still) Rock in America - Ford unveils Harley-Davidson F-150 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 17:58:00 EST.
